Foo Dogs, or lions, are ancient sacred Chinese dogs who guard temples, buildings and houses.  Associated with Buddhism, they are regarded as spiritual protectors and defenders of justice.  Also known as the Happiness Dog and the Celestial Dog, they are displayed in male and female pairs at the entrances to buildings symbolizing energy and value. 

The Chow dog is said to have been bred to resemble the Foo Dog.
